Visiting a grave is a sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. It is a reminder of the Hereafter and an act of mercy towards those who have passed.
- Enter the cemetery from the gate with the right foot first.
- Dress modestly and speak softly — this is a place of remembrance.
- Do not walk over or sit on graves.
- Recite the greeting of peace upon entering (see next section).
- Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and whatever you are able from the Quran.
- Make dua for the deceased and for all Muslims.
- Women may visit graves, though it is best to avoid wailing or excessive weeping.
- Keep your visit brief and focused on worship — it is not a social outing.
